Sativas Vs. Indicas: Which is Best for You?

Sativa and Indica are two of the most popular terms used when describing the effects of cannabis. However, before we get into whether a sativa or indica is best for you, it’s important to clarify that the technical definition of sativa and indica are not related to cannabis effects at all. Rather, a cannabis sativa and cannabis indica plant are two separate species of cannabis, identified by their physical characteristics.

Sativa plants tend to grow taller than indicas and have thinner, longer leaves. Indica plants are typically short and broad with shorter leaves. For the purpose of this blog, we are going to refer to Sativa & Indica in reference to their associated effects, but it’s good to know the technical definition as well!

Sativas

Sativa 1

It’s important to remember that cannabis affects each and every person differently, so while this can be used as a general guideline, effects may vary for different people.

Sativas are known for their uplifting effects and are typically better for daytime use. Sativas can increase your energy, help with focus, create a “head high” sensation, and also enhance creativity. The most common terpenes associated with sativas are limonene and pinene. However, if you are someone that suffers from anxiety, pinene can sometimes overstimulate and trigger anxiety, so be mindful of this when purchasing medicine. A great way to remember the effects associated with sativas is “Sativa = Stay Up”.

Indicas

sativa 2

If you are looking for something more relaxing, an indica might be the best option for you. Indicas are known to provide deep relaxation, sometimes with sedating effects, so it’s great for someone that often has trouble getting to sleep at night.

In addition to aiding sleep and relaxation, indicas can also provide pain relief and act as an appetite stimulant. Due to their relaxing qualities, indicas are typically better for night-time use. The common terpenes associated with indicas are myrcene, caryophyllene, and linalool. A great way to remember the effects associated with indicas is “Indica = In the couch”

Hybrids

sativa 3

Can’t decide if you prefer indica or sativa? Are you looking for a combination of effects from your medicine? Hybrids might just be the perfect solution for you. Hybrids combine terpenes associated with both indicas and sativas to create the perfect blend of both. Some hybrids may lean more towards sativas, others towards indicas, and then every now and again you’ll come across the perfect balance of both. Hybrids give you more range and versatility when deciding which effects you are looking for from your cannabis.
